The Zoo-phonics® Multisensory Language Arts Program is a kinesthetic, multi-modal approach to learning all aspects of language arts, including vocabulary development and articulation, based on phonics and phonemic awareness. The principle of Zoo-phonics® maximizes understanding, memory, utilization and transference to all areas of the reading, spelling and writing process in a playful and concrete manner. Zoo-phonics® is a method developed to make children strong readers and spellers using a “phono” (hearing), “oral” (speaking), “visual” (seeing), “kinesthetic” (moving), and tactile (touching)—whole brain approach. Students actually learn the sounds of the alphabet and advanced phonemic concepts through an easily understood, concrete method of presentation at Valley Presbyterian Christian School.
The Valley Presbyterian Christian School Preschool pre-kindergarten classes, God’s Garden and the Bible Bees, use a portion of the A Beka reading program. Based on sound scholarship, common sense, and the word of God, the A Beka curriculum strives to educate children using a Christian approach to life that is woven throughout the material. The scope and sequence for the program includes phonics, writing, and numbers. In order to prepare your child for kindergarten the pre-kindergarten children are introduced to proper pencil grasp, following verbal directions, and fine motor development each day.
The Valley Presbyterian Christian School pre-kindergarten classes, God’s Garden and the Bible Bees use the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program. Phonemic awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds or phonemes. A child who is phonemically aware is able to isolate sounds, manipulate the sounds, blend and segment the sounds into spoken and written words. Research has shown that children who are phonemically aware excel in reading. The Heggerty program is a hands-on auditory training process that does not involve print, but rather systematically teaches phonics through hearing and playing with digraphs in phonemic awareness which will lead to an understanding of letter and sound correspondences. Each day your child will actively participate in phonemic awareness experiences in a whole group activity approach that will enhance reading skills.
