ABEKA Publishers – A comprehensive reading and language arts program which correlates Reading, Phonics, Spelling, and Grammar. Reading goals will be met through individual, small group, whole group, and independent reading exercises. Dolch lists of sight words (those words which don’t follow usual phonics rules) will be learned through homework practice as a supplement to ABeka. For those students who can read independently, the Accelerated Reading program will be utilized. Weekly spelling tests will monitor your child’s progress of applying phonics skills. Students will write weekly Creative Writing stories. Students will learn Language and Grammar skills with Evan-Moor Daily Language Practice and vocabulary skills with Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop.

Sadlier-Oxford Progress in Mathematics includes the study of money time, single and double digit addition and subtraction, measurement, and skip counting.

Harcourt/Houghton Mifflin emphasizes “Places We Live”, “Our Country’s History”, “Special Americans”, and “Families”.

Walking With God and His People curriculum will focus on God’s gifts through the stories of Jesus, Creation, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Samuel David and Elijah. The student text provides colorful, creative teaching pages and reinforcement activities for every lesson, In addition, students will memorize a weekly Bible Memory Verse and learn catechism questions and answers in class. Students will attend Chapel each Monday and perform in a chapel program.

California Science, by Harcourt/Houghton Mifflin is our Science curriculum. Areas of study will include Life, Earth, and Physical Sciences. Hands-on experiments and cooperative group learning, along with computer and DVD experiences will bring the standards to life. We will do an additional unit on Nutrition provided by the California Milk Advisory Board.

Students will be instructed in Art, Library, Music, and Physical Education. We will learn Creative Writing and Computer Skills in the Computer Lab.


Mrs. Virginia Pierson


Mrs. Virginia Pierson began working at Valley Presbyterian School in 2012 as a paraprofessional in Kindergarten and fifth grade. She graduated from CSUN in 2010 with a BA and credential in elementary education. Before teaching at Valley Presbyterian School she worked for West Valley Christian Academy as a Teacher’s Assistant and substitute teacher for many years.
